What is a Standard Drink?

Whether you are out with friends, celebrating or unwinding, it is safe to know how much alcohol you are consuming. Within Australia, we use standard drinks to measure how much pure alcohol is in the beverage. So, what is a standard drink? A standard drink is defined as containing 10 grams of pure alcohol. This definition can vary slightly depending on where you are in the world.

Here are some examples of what a standard drink looks like in various types of beverages:

  1. Beer: A typical beer (330ml) contains one (1) standard drink. Please note that if it is a higher percent in alcohol, it may be more than one standard.
  2. Wine: A glass of wine (150ml) also contains one (1) standard drink. Please note that if it is a higher percent in alcohol, it may be more than one standard.
  3. Spirits: A single shot (30ml) of spirits, such as vodka, rum, gin, whiskey or tequila, contains one (1) standard drink.
