New Regulations
New NSW Food Safety regulations have come into effect. These regulations require most food service businesses in NSW to have a designated Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) responsible for implementing safe food handling on the premises. The mandatory food handler training has commenced, businesses have 12 months to comply.
Businesses that serve food that is ready to eat, potentially hazardous and not sold and served in its package must have at lest one trained food safety supervisor. Those businesses include: restaurants, cafes, fast food outlets, hotels, nursing homes and clubs.
This legislation not only protects the business, the reputation of the local businesses, and the patrons, it also gives food service workers a natioinally recognised formal food handler qualification which improves their employment prospects and advancement in the industry.
The Food Safety Supervisor
The role of the Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is to complete mandatory training and be in a position to implement safe food handling practice in the business in an effort to safeguard consumers from foodbourne illness.
Businesses are responsbile for ensuring all staff are adequately trained in basic food hygiene practices. Regulation stipulates most food service businesses must appoint at least one Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). The Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) must undertake mandatory training delivered by an approved RTO resulting in a qualification and a certificate from the NSW Food Authority. This training must be refreshed every 5 years.

How to become qualified
To become a qualified Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) the participant must complete two units of competency from the nationally recognised qualfication Cert 11 Hospitality Operations:
Level 1 - Follow Workplace Hygiene Procedures SITXOHS002A
Level 2 - Implement Food Safety Procedures SITXFSA001A
